Autodefensas in Michoacán

Mexikan Neocolonial State Moves Against Autodefensas in Michoacán

As is being reported in the LA Times and elsewhere, the federal government of Mexico has began moving against theautodefensas, armed wings of local communities organized to combat the rise of gang activity and illegal logging. Of course, the recent deterioration of Mexico can be traced to trade agreements like NAFTA and a long history of unequal relations with the United States.

More recently, the DEA has been accused of cooperating with and providing weapons to one of Mexico’s largest drug cartels.

As this documentary explains, the autodefensas are a key component in the current struggle against US-supported drug cartels, illegal loggers, and now the Mexican state itself.
